Tamarind Dipping Sauce (Nước Mắm Me)

This tamarind dipping sauce is my sister’s concoction.  We had fish spring rolls at her house and she made this sauce to dip the spring rolls.  My Caucasian husband actually liked it.  He doesn’t like fish sauce, but I think the tamarind in this sauce hides the fish sauce well.  And boy, is it tasty, especially with fish.  I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.


Tamarind Dipping Sauce (Nước Mắm Me)

A different version of Vietnamese dipping sauce.  Just as good and is great with fish.


  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup tamarind paste (home pressed from tamarind fruit or store bought paste)
  • 1/4 cup fish sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic - minced
  • chili sauce or chopped chilis optional


  1. Dissolve the sugar in water.

  2. Add the rest of the ingredients.  Taste and adjust accordingly.
